Unfortunately, this is seen frequently in our workplace. The issue lies not only in this behavior, but in the fact that the nurses refuse to admit or accept that these behaviors are not permissible, especially at work. This incivility leads to discord among staff members and ultimately affects patient care (Green, 2019). As a critical care nurse, within our unit, there are only a few nurses/staff members who fall into this category. However, as the old saying goes, "a few rotten apples can spoil the bunch". When incivility to this extent takes place, it can cause emotional and physiological stress on nurses. This then leads to higher incidences of depression, lower job satisfaction scores, decreased retention rates, and burnout (McDermott et al., 2021)
