The export of cryptographic technology and devices from the United States was severely restricted by U.S. law until 1992, and was gradually eased until 2000. Although the U.S. Department of Commerce has relaxed restrictions on the export of encryption (scrambling) software for communications, it still bans the export of many such applications.
