In this discussion, you will explore the issues surrounding nuclear energy and its risks.

The Chernobyl and Fukushima accidents were not only caused by faulty reactor designs, but also by human error and years of organizational silence over risks. These accidents have largely contributed to nuclear reactors gradually being phased out worldwide as energy solutions, despite that technically they are associated to lower greenhouse gas emissions than fossil fuels.

Are the perceived risks of nuclear energy overblown, or will human error and poor risk management remain inevitable failings of this technology? But if these shortcomings can be successfully be addressed, can public resistance to nuclear energy be overcome? In the face of climate change and the urgency of phasing out fossil fuels from the energy mix, is the potential risk of another nuclear accident worthwhile in the face of a looming global catastrophe? Or would bringing online enough nuclear reactors to substantially phase out fossil fuels be costly for the gains to be made?

And where does Canada fit into this? How much thrust do you have in the Canadian nuclear industry compared to that of Japan or that of the former Soviet Union? What are the risks of an event like the Chernobyl accident occurring in Canada?
