Activity 1
1 Add to the following list of sayings, words that you have heard said or have said yourself
That's so "gay"
That's so "ghetto"
Lets be "civilised"
We need some "Man power" over here.
What a "basket case"
Wow you are "pretty for an Aboriginal"
It's a case of Chinese whispers
You speak so well, you are a credit to your race
Are you a "half caste"?
Don't be an ‘Indian Giver"
She is so "bossy".

1. What is the message that is being conveyed in the saying/word?
2. What is the history of the saying/word
3. What value could this message be supporting?
Tutorial Activities
ACTIVITY 1- Implicit bias testing
1. Proceed to the following link to participate in up to three tests to explore implicit biases that you may have (noting the limitations of this type of test). You do not have to share your results unless you choose too.
2. Once completed get into pairs and answer the following questions
a. Were you surprised by your results? Why/why not?
b. Why do you think you have developed this particular bias?
c. Is there anything you are currently doing to address this implicit bias or strategies that you can think of to address this implicit bias?
ACTIVITY 2 - listening
Reflect on the list below of the different ways in which we listen. Share with your partner how you think you have been listening to the people that you have an implicit bias against. The person listening needs to notice how they are listening to the speaker and vice versa.
