Cell membranes are now known to be organized into double monolayers or "bilayers" of molecules with nonpolar tails and polar heads. Researchers in 1925 first demonstrated the existence of the bilayer in the cell membrane by disrupting the cell membranes from a known number of cells. The lipids from the broken cell membranes covered a water surface with about twice the area of the cell membranes themselves. Suppose all of the cell membranes in a sample of cells were disrupted and added dropwise to water in a Petri dish until a monolayer formed. Estimate the average area of a cell in square micrometers, and the diameter of a single cell in micrometers, using the data below. Assume the cells are roughly spherical.
