Explain the roles of a manager and leader within criminal justice. When it comes to the roles of a manager and leader within a criminal justice agency such as a police department, both managers and leaders play an important role, however the responsibilities and approaches may be different. A manager in a police department is responsible for planning, organizing, and coordinating the work of the officers. Managers maintain the status quo, monitor the means by which the job is getting done, and solve problems as they come up in the organization. They are responsible for setting goals, developing strategies, and creating policies and procedures to make sure that the department is working effectively. They are often involved in problem-solving and decision-making processes and are responsible for ensuring that the department complies with laws and regulations. On the other hand, a leader in a police department is a person that inspires, motivates, and guides officers in achieving the department's goals. They set the vision, give direction for and create a positive work environment. Leaders often focus on building relationships, fostering teamwork, and developing the skills and potential of their officers. (Fiedler, 1967) stated that leaders should be able to adapt. (Chapter1)
