(a) Describe conflict, and discuss TWO (2) major trends that may give rise to conflict in the hospital context in Singapore.
Conflict exists no matter what your occupation is and where you work. Healthcare is no exception. In fact, the hospital setting is prone to conflict as physicians, nurses and technologists work in fast-paced, complex and stressful environments. Conflicts appears in many different forms. It can occur between a nurse and a physician; medical staff with patients and their relatives; between nursing teams or entire divisions; or between the medical staff and the executive board. Common conflicts include the attending physician disagreeing with a nurse's approach towards patient care or vice versa; differences in how the dayshift and nightshift nursing teams work; disagreements in the urgency or importance of tasks; departments fighting for resources to buy medical equipment that they need or/and management cutting costs measures incurring the ire of medical staff as it means compromising care quality. Conflict in the hospital varies in nature depending on the parties involve and matter at hand.
(b) Distinguish the THREE (3) types of conflicts that may arise in teams. Illustrate the types described in the case scenario above.
(c) Imagine you are a HR Director working in a local hospital, develop a plan to reduce and manage conflict within your hospital using theories of effective teams and managing conflicts.
