As nurses, we are often too hyperfocused on the need to provide quality patient-centered care to all our patients that it tends to overshadow the need to care for ourselves. This can be detrimental, especially to our own mental health and overall well-being. The stress known as compassion fatigue is a result from constant exposure to traumatized and sick individuals that lead to a convergence of secondary traumatic stress and cumulative burnout. It is commonly seen in professions where there is regular exposure to traumatic experiences such as in healthcare, emergency, and community service.
