Every day people of New York City experience increasing homelessness in the subway, parks, streets. It became a great challenge for the largest cities in America. In 2019 New York City was the number one, having the most significant number of homeless people, reaching 78,604. 1 in every 106 people is homeless now. The number of homeless people is only rising tremendously. According to the Coalition for the Homeless in 2021, homeless people often experience mental illness and addiction disorders. The people of New York are very concerned with homelessness and its consequent problems. Research conducted by the Coalition of homeless in 2021 shows that the main reasons for homelessness include lack of affordable housing, lost jobs, and domestic violence. Those people are at a higher risk of developing mental diseases, infectious diseases, trauma. Homelessness leads to mental health conditions such as depression and PTSD. The further stress adds up to the exacerbation of already existing mental health issues. Those mental problems only worsen as those homeless people have limited access to care, inadequate food, and protection, and limited social services. This situation is scary for the whole society as it is a public health problem.
