Using whole-cell patch-clamp recordings in rodent brain slices, Saa al et al. 2003 demonstrated that excitatory synapses on midbrain dopamine neurons were potentiated 24 hours after in vivo exposure to cocaine. However midbrain dopamine neurons receive synaptic inputs from many different brain regions and since they electrically stimulated all these afferent fibres synapsing on to the midbrain dopaminergic neurons, they were unable to define more specifically which synapses were potentiated.

Redesign their experiment using optogenetics instead of electrical stimulation to determine if synaptic inputs from basal lateral amygdala(BLA)glutamatergic neurons are potentiated in midbrain dopamine neurons after cocaine exposure.
