Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and ADHD can often co-occur (Preston et al., 2021). The symptoms of GAD include excessive anxiety and worry, difficulty controlling worry, restlessness, fatigue, trouble concentrating, irritability, muscle tension, and sleep difficulties (American Psychiatric Association, 2022). The symptoms of ADHD include hyperactivity, impulsivity, low self-control, problems with focus, and lack of motivation to complete boring tasks (Preston et al., 2021). Name two medication that would be used to treat each disorder and list the symptoms they alleviate. SSRIs are commonly used to treat GAD (Preston et al., 2021). For example, Fluvoxamine (Luvox) can help alleviate excessive and exaggerated worry, muscle tension, headaches, nausea, sweating, increased heart rate, insomnia, and an exaggerated startle response (Preston et al., 2021). Similarly, Citalopram (Celexa), another SSRI, treats similar symptoms by increasing serotonin levels to improve mood and reduce anxiety (Preston et al., 2021). Methylphenidates, such as Ritalin, are used to treat ADHD by addressing symptoms like hyperactivity, impulsivity, lack of attention, difficulty staying on task, and low motivation to focus on mundane tasks (Preston et al., 2021). Amphetamines, such as Adderall, treat the same symptoms as Ritalin, though individual responses to these medications.
