Assignment:
For this assignment, please find an example of religion in the news or an essay/article/video/book/podcast on some contemporary issue in religion. You will then summarize of the issue and tie it into the larger information on religion and that specific religion we are studying in class. For example, if there is an article about a group of homicidal Taoists, then tie their beliefs into the mainstream Taoist beliefs we've studied and look at how they are using religion to justify what they are doing. (This is a very made-up example!!)
Be sure to share the link (or, in the case of a book or magazine article, the publication information) to what you are writing about. Think about your source and how neutral or reliable it is. (Was the article about homicidal Taoists in an anti-Taoist newspaper or a reputable one -- can you find other sources talking about the incident or issue?)
Put the issue in context (time, place, religion, what is the change or conflict or tension).
Your submission should be at least three well-developed, detailed, and organized pages. Be as precise and specific as you can and use what you have learned this semester, both in terms of the Eight Characteristics of Religion and about particular religions, to guide you.
Some Ideas:
- Religion and gender or sexuality
- Changes in ritual or practice
- Climate change or other conflicts
- Religion in school
- Religious practice during the pandemic
- New interpretations of texts or religious law
- Positive inter-religious dialogue
