TASK
Purpose
In today's rapidly evolving digital environment, organisations increasingly rely on effective project management and planning practices to deliver complex Information Systems (IS) projects. While traditional project management approaches provide structured planning, control, and predictability, Agile methodologies offer flexibility, adaptability, and continuous stakeholder engagement. As a result, many organisations are transitioning towards hybrid project management approaches that integrate both methodologies to improve project success.
However, selecting and applying an appropriate project management approach is not always straightforward. Projects vary in terms of complexity, uncertainty, stakeholder requirements, and technological change. Therefore, it is essential for project managers to critically evaluate different methodologies and determine how they can be effectively applied, adapted, or combined in real-world scenarios.
In this assessment, you are required to act as a project management consultant and conduct an in-depth analysis of a real-world Information Technology (IT) project (either successful or unsuccessful). The purpose of this assignment is to evaluate the project management methodology used, critically assess its effectiveness, and propose improvements based on Agile, Traditional, or Hybrid approaches.
Through this task, you will strengthen your research, analytical thinking, and professional report-writing skills, while learning to integrate academic literature with practical case study insights.
Task Description
In this assessment, you will analyse a real-world Information Technology (IT) project (either successful or unsuccessful) from the perspective of a project management consultant. Your focus is to examine the project management methodology applied, evaluate its effectiveness, and explore how it could be improved using Agile, Traditional, or Hybrid approaches.
To achieve this, you must conduct a literature review by identifying and analysing at least ten (10) peer-reviewed academic sources relevant to project management methodologies. You are expected to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical insights from your selected case study. Your analysis should go beyond description and demonstrate critical thinking, evaluation, and justification of your arguments.
Furthermore, you are required to compare Agile and Traditional methodologies, examine their strengths and limitations, and explore how hybrid approaches can be effectively implemented. You should also identify potential challenges or conflicts that may arise when combining these methodologies and propose realistic strategies to address them.
This assignment contributes 40% of the total unit grade, reflecting its importance in developing your analytical, research, and professional writing skills. Students are strongly encouraged to begin early, engage with academic literature throughout the trimester, and progressively refine their work to produce a high-quality submission.
Step 1: Task Understanding
Read the Instructions and Checklist carefully
Read the Guide: Rubrics in Cadmus Manual and then your Marking Rubric
Read the Example: Individual Assignment
Step 2: Selecting a Project
Choose a real-world IT project (successful or unsuccessful) Ensure sufficient reliable information is available about the project Identify:
Project context (organisation, goals, scope)
Project outcomes (success, failure, or mixed results)
Determine which project management methodology was used (Traditional (Waterfall), Agile, Hybrid)
Step 3: Selecting Sources
Use academic databases to find relevant sources Select at least 10 peer-reviewed articles
Focus on Agile, Traditional, and Hybrid methodologies
Check that each source is published in a credible academic journal or conference proceeding
Step 4: Critical Reading
As you read each source, take notes using this framework:
The author's purpose: why was the research conducted?
The author's approach: what assumptions or perspectives are evident?
Key concepts: how are Agile, Traditional, or Hybrid approaches defined?
Findings: what strengths, limitations, or challenges are identified?
Relevance: how does this source help explain or evaluate your chosen project?
Step 5: Plan Your Literature Review
Identify key themes in the literature (e.g. flexibility, risk management, stakeholder engagement, change management)
Draft a clear argument or position that your literature review will establish - this should set up your project analysis
Step 6: Write the Report
Work through each section in order. Use the guidance below to focus your writing.
Introduction
Clearly state the purpose and objectives of the report.
Provide a brief overview of the selected IT project and outline the focus of your analysis.
Literature Review
Conduct a critical review of relevant academic literature on project management methodologies, including Agile, Traditional (Waterfall), and Hybrid approaches.
You are required to use at least ten (10) peer-reviewed academic sources to support your discussion.
Project Analysis and Discussion
Analyse your selected IT project in detail and critically evaluate the project management methodology used.
Your discussion should include:
Identification of the methodology applied (Agile, Traditional, or Hybrid)
Evaluation of strengths and weaknesses
Analysis of how effectively the methodology addressed project requirements
Comparison with alternative approaches (e.g., Agile vs Traditional)
Identification of challenges, limitations, or failures
You are expected to demonstrate critical thinking, not just description.
Recommendations
Propose well-justified recommendations for improving the project using Agile or Hybrid approaches.
Discuss how these recommendations could enhance project success and address the issues identified in your analysis.
Conclusion
Summarise the key findings of your report.
Highlight the most important insights regarding project management methodologies and their practical application.
References
Provide a complete list of references using the Holmes Adapted Harvard Referencing style.
All in-text citations must be correctly formatted and consistent with the reference list.
Step 7: Review
Re-read the Marking Rubric and check your work against each criterion.
Check that your report is at least 2,500 words (excluding references).
Read for logical flow - does each section connect clearly to the next?
Check all citations and references are correctly formatted and consistent.
Proofread for spelling, grammar, and academic tone, particularly when discussing software engineering and IT project delivery practices.
