Census Search Guidelines:
I. Visit the website (use Chrome or another compatible browser, Safari doesn't work)
A.) In the search bar type, "S0502." This number corresponds to a table called "Selected Characteristics of the Foreign-Born Population by Period of Entry into the United States." Click on the table. Then use the filters on the left to select "Place." Enter the state and the city you'd like to analyze. Then on the right you'll click the plus sign under the name of the table. Choose the year and your table with open up. (You will choose two different years for this assignment). Make sure that you read the top of the tables to confirm you're looking at city-level data (vs. statewide or nationwide).
B.)You will also want to search for table "DP02" in the search bar, which corresponds to "Selected Social Characteristics in the United States." Your filters using the same "Place" criteria as you used for S0502 should still be available. This table will give you the city's total population data that you can use as a reference point to understand how the foreign-born population relates to the city as a whole. Click on the plus sign on the right under the table name and choose your years to match what you chose above.
C.) If your city is small or has a small immigrant population, it may not have an S0502 table and may only have the DP02 table. In that case, you may need to examine the nearest largest city if there aren't at least three foreign-born population variables. Please see me if you need help with this and we can figure out a workaround.
D.) Since you will examine 2 different years of data to compare for this assignment, be sure to pay attention to the whether you're selecting ACS 1-Year Estimates or 5-Year Estimates so that you can make sure your comparisons match. ACS 1-year estimates are available for cities with at least 65,000 people and 5-year estimates are available for cities of all sizes.
E.) Examine the data that pertains to the immigrant population and how it compares to the total population.
i. You'll be looking at variables like Total Population, Place of Birth, U.S. Citizenship Status, Year of Entry, World of Region of Birth of Foreign Born, Language Spoken at Home, Race and Hispanic or Latino Origin, Ancestry, etc. Are there any other variables that you noted as interesting as they might pertain to immigration?
ii. Take note of the totals and percentages. You'll use these numbers in your essay.
II. You will use this data to write a short essay reporting what you learned about the foreign-born/immigrant population in this city, comparing change over time. Be sure to tell the reader what two years the data was from and cite the website pages as your data sources from the activity. See the essay guidelines below.
Essay Guidelines:
I. Introduction
A.) Introduce your topic and provide a thesis that explains the argument you will make about the immigrant population in the city you studied and how you will link it to concepts from the class readings/outside sources.
II. Methods A. Describe your city and your experience with the city you chose to analyze (where is it, how long you lived there/or how you are familiar with it, what types of experiences you had there generally, etc.)
B.) Describe how you collected your data from the census website and what you did with the data.
III. Findings
A.) Describe and analyze the foreign-born population census data and your experiences.
Addressing the following:
i. What are the top three or four immigrant regions of origin in your city? You can tell this by looking at the top three or four regions of birth for the foreign-born population in your chosen city.
1. Provide descriptive percentages, they are often more informative, so use these when appropriate (e.g., what percentage of the foreign-born population is from Latin America or Asia?). Region of origin is one variable. Make a total of at least 3 observations about the data, or in other words, examine 3 different variables.
ii. Reflecting on your time living in or becoming familiar with your city (San Jose, CA. Use the familiar) how does what you found in the census data compare to your lived experience and what you know of the city?
