The purpose of this discussion forum is to examine the coding rules for the anesthesia and medical surgical section of your CPT manual. Demonstrating good CPT coding skills can help increase revenue for your provider.

Coding for the anesthesia package depends upon many factors.

• Anesthesia care is provided by an anesthesia practitioner who may be a physician, a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) with or without medical direction, or an anesthesia assistant (AA) with medical direction.
• The anesthesia care package consists of preoperative evaluation, standard preparation and monitoring services, administration of anesthesia, and post-anesthesia recovery care.
• Preoperative evaluation that includes sufficient history and physical examination and patient consultation.
• Patient factors and comorbidities
• Types of anesthesia include local, regional, epidural, general, moderate conscious sedation, or monitored anesthesia care.
• The procedure.
• Coding often requires add-on codes and modifiers.

1. Explain how the procedure, type of anesthesia, and provider type along with the findings from a preoperative patient examination can affect coding for anesthesia management. What factors should be considered?
2. Provide two patient scenarios with the anesthesia code(s) that include the procedure, and code for anesthesia with any addon codes and/or modifiers required and explain the rationale for your code choices. You do not need to code the co-morbidities of patient or specific characteristics, just explain if they affected the code choices.
