Despite what many believe and research may have revealed. Being wealthy does equate to better health. However, even those without financial wealth can still have the health of someone with wealth. In a bustling metropolis, there are two different stark contrast in the interplay between health and wealth. a high-powered executive with a seven-figure salary, appears to have it all - a luxurious penthouse, designer wardrobe, and frequent exotic vacations. Yet beneath this veneer of success lies a host of health issues: chronic stress, sleep deprivation, and a lifestyle-induced heart condition. On the other hand, a middle-school teacher with a modest income, prioritizes there well-being through regular exercise, a balanced diet, and strong social connections.
This case study explores how financial prosperity doesn't always correlate with good health, examining the factors that influence overall well-being beyond monetary wealth. When health is absent, wisdom cannot reveal itself, art cannot become manifest, strength cannot be exerted, wealth is useless, and the reason is powerless"(Burton et al., 2021). Having a demanding career, while financially rewarding, takes a significant toll on ones physical and mental health. Long work hours, high-pressure decisions, and constant connectivity leave little time for self-care or relaxation. Despite access to top-tier healthcare, an individuals lifestyle choices can counteract potential benefits, leading to deteriorating health outcomes.
One reason why being wealthy doesnt necessarily mean you have the best health is because our health is not weighed by our finincail gain. Its gauged by how well you treat your body and the foods we eat. As explained above someone in a lower income bracket can eat healthy and exercise and be in better-standing health than a millionaire. A wealthy person can afford high-quality food and a personal trainer, but they must choose to use these resources wisely. If they make poor lifestyle choices, such as eating unhealthy food, not exercising, or abusing substances, their health can suffer. Most people who are wealthy are more focused on their assets and financial gain. Whereas someone in a lower income bracket focuses more on health and mental stability as every day is a challenge but having the stability and mindset to keep going is much more essential.
Living with less financial stability meaning at a lower income level sometimes leaves individuals believing that they can't have a better lifestyle by simply being healthy because everyone believes our wealth determines our health. This can be due to different advertisements in different areas that can be a huge influence in our communities. According to social scientist "Entrenched commercial interests that market foods and products that foster ill-health must be fought and removed from decision-making areas at the top. This is unlikely to happen anywhere in the world, however, which means that individuals and communities must take their health and wealth into their own hands (Thomas, 2022)".
Unfortunately for the wealthiest Americans being wealthy doesn't guarantee you any more time on this earth than anyone else. Lower-income communities have been faced with fewer resources in healthcare, education, housing, etc. All communities should have the same quality of access and care as wealthier communities. "Namely, by addressing social determinants of health-such as income, education, housing, employment, transportation, environmental conditions, and neighborhood conditions-policymakers can improve health, reduce racial disparities, and contribute to economic mobility (Rosenthal et al., 2022)".
However, lower income levels are linked to mass health disparities in black and Hispanic communities. There is evidence, for example, that less wealth is related to individuals' elevated levels of anxiety and frustration and a diminished sense of control over their lives. Wealth-related stress may lead to not only poor mental health but also a reduction in mental capacity(Park et al., 2021).
