Contemporary Issues in HRM

Task Instructions:
Chose a contemporary topic in the area of human resource management and write a report using the suggested structure: see below. You will need to review a range of literature in that area to provide a summary of theories and research findings and then provide industry insights. You must also highlight any innovations as well as any ethical and legal issues that arise. Following these suggested steps will help you complete the assignment:

Step 1: Topic selection
Select a topic from the current issues in HRM (e.g. work-life balance, contingent workforce) that interests you. Discuss and confirm your selected topic with your lecturer before commencing.

Step 2: Literature review
To fully understand the topic and research findings, read some relevant books and articles from quality journals (e.g. Human Resource Management, Human Resource Management Journal, and International Journal of Human Resource Management) and industry magazines (e.g. HR Monthly from AHRI) on your topic.

Step 3: Gain access to an organisation/industry (preferably) or rely on publicly available information
Investigate how the organisation/industry addresses the issue under focus. In doing this you will need to:
Document the specific practices the company employs.
Examine and analyse the effectiveness and efficiency of those practices from various sources (e.g. websites, case studies, industry magazines articles, interviews, manuals of policies, documents, or newspapers/magazines/news/media stories).
Identify any innovations.
Remember, you also need to consider relevant ethical and legal aspects.

Step 4: Report writing
Prepare the report arranging and summarising the information (collected in steps 2 and 3) using the following suggested structure:

Cover page
Title page
Topic
Your name and student ID
Organisation/industry
Introduction (?~100 words)
Briefly note the purpose of the report.
Literature Summary (20 marks, ~900 words)

Provide a summary of academic and practitioner literature on your topic using appropriate sub-headings based on your topic and research. The focus here is on establishing what academics and industry professionals / peak bodies say about the topic.
Practice (25 marks, ~1000 words)

The company practices.
Effectiveness and efficiency of those practices from various sources (e.g., websites, case studies, industry magazines articles, interviews, manuals of policies, documents, or newspapers/magazines/news/media stories).

An application of your literature analysis to suggest new innovations or to expand on current innovations employed by the organisation.
An application of your knowledge of ethical and legal principles and practices to highlight relevant issues nominating resulting responses.
