Assignment:

My hypothesis is that smoking is associated with pre-term birth. I have considered five possible study designs to evaluate this association. Name the study design that matches each description and indicate one strength and one limitation of the design specifically as it relates to this research question. The options are: ecological, cross-sectional, case-control, prospective cohort, and randomized trial.

  • Look at population-wide rates of smoking in women of childbearing age and population-wide rates of pre-term birth. Do not collect any individual-level data. Evaluate correlations between population-wide measures.
  • Recruit women early in pregnancy and gather data on whether they smoke. Follow these women throughout their pregnancy and assess whether they had a preterm delivery or a term delivery. Use the relative risk or rate ratio.
  • Recruit women who delivered an infant pre-term and a comparable group of women who delivered an infant at term. Ask both groups whether they smoked during pregnancy. Use odds ratio to compare populations.
  • A smoking cessation intervention is administered to women who report smoking and intention to conceive. Exposure is assigned (intervention vs. not) and then women are followed for outcome. Use the relative risk or rate ratio.
  • Query a large population of women who recently gave birth and ask whether they smoked in pregnancy and whether they had a pre-term birth. Do not recruit based on exposure or disease, just query a population on both exposure and disease. Use odds ratio to compare populations.
