Question

As this author emerges into the ARNP role nursing theories such as Peplau's Theory of Interpersonal Relations which describes four phases of nurses to gain a better understanding of their own behaviors as well as others and how to identify the needs of each. Peplau's four phases consisted of the orientation phase, identification phase, exploitation phase, and the termination phase. These phases allow the nurse to identify what the patient's perceived problem is, to the next phase which builds the relationship of the nurse or provider that uses education and skill set to meet the individualized patient needs. Next is assisting the patient towards a resolution of their problem so that the nurse is no longer needed and lastly is for the patient to be removed from the nurse's care to promote reliance of self (Adams, 2017, pp 9-10). This theory is important in building a foundation to strengthen relationships with patients as well as establishing trust between professionals and patient while teaching the patients the necessary skills needed to practice independence in their lives.
