Question
Miller meets with a 25-year-old man who is coming to terms with the death of his baby eight years earlier. As a result of the loss, he went through a period of confusion, suicidal ideation, drug abuse, and alienation from friends and family. Miller begins the session by explaining that his approach requires that they monitor the outcome of their time together by using two scales, one for measuring initial issues and the other for gathering feedback on the session. The client fills out the form, and together they explore his responses, which reveal a wish for improved social relations. Through empathic listening, Miller learns how the client survived through faith. Miller guides the client as he clarifies present goals to rebuild his life by clarifying career goals, reuniting with family and friends, and regaining their support.
