Arguements and case study for Several studies have been conducted examining the use of EMR/EHR systems and the impact on quality. While implementation of these systems is still in progress and evolving, understanding the early results is important and will likely result in ongoing changes to both the regulatory requirements and EMR/EHR systems. The results and key findings from two recent studies are summarized below: Kruse, Hays, Orav, Palan, and Sequist (2017) examined EHR functionalities, perceived usefulness, and barriers to adoption by surveying 333 physicians practicing in an underserved Indian Health Service setting. They found that physicians routinely used a median 7 of 10 EHR functionalities and only 5% percent used all 10. 63% felt the EHR improved quality of care, but 76% reported increased documentation time, and 45% reported reduced quality in patient-physician interactions. Their major conclusion was that significant opportunities exist to increase use of EHR functionalities and preserve physician-patient interactions and productivity in a resource-limited environment.
