Some describe it as a toolkit of material and nonmaterial components that help people adapt to their circumstances. Because of this, as the concept of cultural relativity emphasizes, cultural traits must be evaluated in the context of their own culture.

2. The structural-function a list approach emphasizes how culture shapes us rather than how culture itself is shaped. In contrast, conflict theorists focus on why culture develops in certain ways and not others, and whose interests these patterns serve. Symbolic interactionists focus on how people interpret and use cultural materials such as the mass media.
