Question
Imagine that you are a Learning and Development/HRD professional working for a large, multistate health care provider. Your organization-Providence St. Joseph Health-has roughly 119,000 employees, or "caregivers," working in seven states in the western United States. In particular, you are tasked with providing opportunities for learning and leadership development to over 900 nurse managers working throughout the region. It has been determined that the following topics will be emphasized: facilitating communication, goal setting, managing teams, coach-ing, resolving conflict, and leading change. The main issue is how Providence St. Joseph can develop these nurse managers-especially given how busy they are with their regular, day-to-day responsibilities.
1. If you were involved in designing and implementing this leadership development effort for nurse managers, what types of learning opportunities would you emphasize?
2. Are there particular methods or learning approaches that you would want to emphasize? Why?
3. To what extent would you emphasize technology-based or technology-enhanced learning?
4. Would you seek to involve nurses, nurse managers, and organizational management in developing this new training for nurse managers, and if so, how?
