The treatment approaches for these two types of addictions also vary in several ways.
Firstly, the detoxification stage, common in substance use disorder treatment to manage withdrawal symptoms, is generally not necessary in process addictions (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2024).
Secondly, pharmaceutical interventions that target specific neural pathways and withdrawal symptoms are more prevalent in treating substance use disorders than behavioral addictions.
Thirdly, while both require behavior modification strategies, process addictions may place a stronger emphasis on cognitive-behavioral therapy to address underlying issues and retrain thought processes associated with the behavior (Driscoll, 2024). Age and developmental stages significantly influence these treatment approaches. Adolescents, for example, might require different therapeutic approaches compared to adults due to their ongoing cognitive development and heightened susceptibility to peer influences (Kime, 2018).
Similarly, older adults may face different challenges, such as co-existing medical conditions that require integrated treatment plans. Tailoring interventions to the individual's developmental stage enhances the efficacy of either treatment approach, recognizing the unique complexities associated with each life phase (SAMHSA, n.d.).
