Scientists around the world address their concerns and recommend what needs to be done to mitigate the harmful effects of global warming.

Scientists have pieced together a record of the Earth's climate by analyzing samples from ice cores, tree rings, glacier lengths, pollen remains, and ocean sediments, and by studying changes in the Earth's orbit around the sun. This record shows that the climate fluctuates (changes) naturally over periods of time, but this variability does not explain the observed warming since the 1950s. As scientists continue to collect data to monitor the impacts of climate change, they make predictions of what the future will look like.

Some additional effects of climate change are extreme weather events, shrinking continental ice sheets, glacial melt, and warmer oceans that lead to ocean acidification. Earth's systems cannot handle all the rapid changes at once. For example, organisms cannot adapt to the changes to their environment and will die. The depletion of fossil fuels and harsh weather events will affect human's ability to survive changing conditions.
