Question
Ben and Gerri had been saving for years for their dream vacation cruise to Bermuda on the luxury ship Endemic. They had a great time eating all day at open buffet tables, swimming in the deck pool and touring islands. Ben even took his first dip in a jacuzzi.
However, by the last few days of the trip, they were both feeling pretty poorly-- tired, coughing, fever. A few weeks later, Ben, Gerri & 16 other passengers were hospitalized with Legionnaires' disease. There were 30 other suspected cases, and one person died.
1. Based on the information you have been provided so far, what is the problem in this case study?
2. What are some methods that could be used to solve this problem?
3. Evaluate each proposed solution in question 2 with respect to feasibility, cost, access to resources, and their potential to impact the problem in this scenario.
4. What causes Legionnaires' disease? Briefly describe the lifestyle of the pathogen involved in this disease outbreak.
