An above ground pool needs to be drained. The drained water will be used to irrigate a garden and some trees at the bottom of the hill, the pool sits at the top of. You have a 1 inch diameter hose to drain the pool. The pool is 5 feet deep, and 12 feet in diameter. The bottom of the pool is 12 feet above the bottom of the hill where the water will be drained to.
a) At the time the pool first starts draining, what is the velocity, in feet per second, of the water at the discharge point from the drain hose? Assume friction and viscous effects can be neglected and the Bernoulli Equation for flow along a stream line can be used. Also assume the velocity within the pool is negligible in comparison to the velocity at the outlet of the hose.
b) What is the velocity (fps) at the outlet of the drain hose when the pool only has 6 inches of water in the bottom of it?
c) Does the density or specific weight of the water factor into the velocity of the water at the discharge point?
d) Assuming no friction losses in the hose, will the velocity change if the hose is draped over the handrail going around the pool instead of going under it?
