Another fallout of the Dreyfus Affair was the belief that the teachings of the Church were counter to a strong republic. As a result, following the Affair and the Prussian Victory of 1871, France sought to separate these two institutions that had previously been intimately linked, leading to what is known today as laicit, the separation of church and state.
