Caring for elders Edward is an only child, age 45, who is concerned for his mother, Betty, age 70. Betty has started to become forgetful (she forgot a doctor's appointment this month), and she tripped on her kitchen rug last week. Betty has said many times that she never wants to leave her home. Edward talks to his nurse, Samantha, about how to care for his mother as she continues to age. He wants to be sure he makes correct, caring decisions. Samantha admires Edward's forethought, especially since his concern is clearly a reflection of love and caring.

Samantha gives Edward practical suggestions such as removing throw rugs from Betty's house and improving the lighting. She shows support for Edward's commitment to do everything he can to help Betty stay in her home. Samantha also suggests that Edward help Betty remember her doctors' appointments with reminders and to offer to go with Betty to her appointments.
