Subject: Diversity, Personality and Values
Instructions
Consider your business career (actual or anticipated) and what you learned this week about how diversity, personality, and values influence organizational success. What values do you expect fellow employees to demonstrate in the workplace? What differences do you expect? What will you do to promote an ethical and diverse workforce? Why will this be helpful to you and your organization? How might the current political values climate influence the workplace and your role as manager? What role does personality play in your workplace?
---The values I would expect my fellow employees to have in the workforce includes a set of Strong Work Ethics, being Dependable and Responsible, they are Honest and have great Self Esteem. Employees with strong work ethics possess the quality of being dedicated and willing to work efficiently to complete tasks. They are dependable and have good sense of time management and they report to work on time. These employees value their jobs and always have a positive attitude. They are trustworthy and self-motivated to get the work done. They are able to understand their responsibilities and performed outstandingly with minimum supervision.
Some differences that can be expected are Gender Equality, Generation Gap, and Ethnic and Cultural differences. As stated in the text, “women are not just expertise but have valuable interpersonal skills and styles in the workplace, such as listening and abilities to multitask”. Yet they are stereotyped for “caretaking skills” and are seen as weak. This issue would have to be resolved within the organization to change the perception. The generation gap can be a big issue, as the newcomers are coming in; the old timers are feeling threatened. The new comers have a different mindset and are more technology advanced compared to the old timers which can be intimidating to the older group. They would not hesitate to move on to another job, if something doesn’t suit their skillset; and this can result in a high turnover for the company.
I would create an open communication policy to avoid any barriers between upper management and non-management employees. The pay scale would have to be fitting to the skillset of the employees as well as fair and unbiased promotions. Of course training would have to be done to enforce clear understanding on the different cultures and how to interact with each other. This training will heightened the level of awareness of ethical choices also.
The current political climate is one of partisanship. At the highest level our politicians hardly ever collaborate for the best interest of the country. It is always the democrats against the republicans instead of working together for the best country. The same environment crept into the workplace where the general populous are also divided along party lines. Generally the workplace consists of members of both parties and they themselves are divided along party lines. With such a division in the workplace creates friction and team members doesn’t work together thus reducing productivity. As a manager, I must first be aware of the environment that exist among the employees; and tend to alleviate it as much as possible by subduing political discussions and encourage more aggregable topics such as sports or family.
Personality is the center of how we interact on a daily basis. It spells out our creativeness, our ability to think and innovatively solve company issues. It determines our ability to work as a team, as not everyone works well in a team. Personality also determines if someone is an introvert or extrovert; if they are socially assertive and if they can interact easily with others. This is important in providing a friendly and supportive customer services and they can boost the attitudes of other employees. Thus in knowing someone’s personality enable everyone to network easier to work as a team and successfully accomplish tasks.
