Question
We are discussing ethical delimas around human genetics and eugenics. My first question is what is human genetics are eugenics? Eugenics is the practice of improving human species by selecting specific desirable hereditary traits. Often this done through embryo selection. Embryo selection can occur outside the womb with the goal of choosing the most "fit" embryo. During the process of selection of an embryo genetic testing is done in combination with in vitro fertilization, this allows for selection of a embryo that is free of single gene defects (Bouffard, 2016). This process ensures that there is no gene defects such as chromosomal abnormalities, cystic fibrosis, Huntington's disease etc. (Bouffard, 2016). One way to this of this process is completing genetic testing on an embryo before implantation versus a woman having genetic testing done while the embryo is developing in the uterus. After some research on embryo selection, it seems clearer to me and I feel that it is justifiable. I assumed that embryo selection was like picking the specific characteristics of the infant, but it is used to refine gene defects throughout the embryos that would result in significant gene defects later in the infant after birth. As I mentioned it is similar to genetic testing for fetus before the fetus is full term but just before implantation into the uterus. Some genetic defects can have life long impacts of individuals and families, if prompted with the option to ensure that there would be no significant gene defect of the embryo I wouldn't see why it would be an ethical issue.
