Question

Discuss the findings from the selected systematic review. The findings of this systematic review identify that access to education and staff training is important for PI prevention. In most included studies, continuing education was an important element but the impact of education and staff training on PI development was not evaluated. There is evidence that evidence-based PI education programmes have been shown to improve nurses' knowledge, clinical judgement, practical skills and ability to adapt theoretical content to practice to improve outcomes (Park et al., 2020; Tweed & Tweed, 2008). Park et al. (2020) have also demonstrated that knowledge begins to decline if continuous training is not sustained. We recommend that education programmes should reinforce the role and value of nurses' knowledge on PI prevention. Nurses who value PI prevention measures tend to be more attentive and willing to provide care that protects patients (Samuriwo, 2010). Moreover, staff training on PI prevention can minimise variations in practice and ensure staff have the knowledge required to provide evidence-based care (Iranmanesh et al., 2011; Soban et al., 2017). Evidence suggests that having a highly trained nurse who is knowledgeable about PIs within the unit improves nurses' compliance with preventive initiatives and may help determine the standard of practice (Richardson et al., 2017).
