Part A: Privilege Worksheet
All of us have privileges. There is no such thing as a culture-neutral social work encounter. We always bring with us our cultures, histories, experiences, strengths, weaknesses, biases, and privileges. For Part A, please respond to the following discussion questions considering the information from the worksheet:
- Why is it important to consider and be aware of your privilege?
- How can you use your privileges to address inequality and make a difference?
- How do you anticipate your "privilege" impacting this professional relationship?
- What skills and knowledge do you need to address these factors with your clients?
Part B: Privilege Sale
For this activity, you are asked to imagine that you hold none of the privileges listed below. However, you can buy them. Try not to base your selections on the privileges you currently hold. You have a budget of $3, and each listed privilege costs $1.
- White privilege
- Cisgender privilege
- Male privilege
- Heterosexual privilege
- Socioeconomic privilege
- Citizenship privilege
- Able-bodied privilege
For Part B, please reply to this discussion with your responses to the following questions:
- Which privileges did you select?
- How did you go about picking privileges?
- Based on your readings, what benefits and/or advantages are associated with your selected privileges?
