Mayer: Chapter 3 - Power and Conflict
Step Two: Referencing concepts, principles, and perspectives from our reading and video this week--aimed at deepening your understanding of power and conflict and offering guidance about interventions or approaches to deal with power issues and conflicts at work, respond to the following questions:
1. Using Mayer's framework which outlines "specific sources of power" (Chapter 3, pp. 5-10), identify the various source of power that each of the main characters (Carl--the chef, and the restaurant owner) have in this conflict scene in the kitchen of a restaurant. (Hint: each of the characters has more than one source of power!). Discuss what you believe is the impact of each source of power for the employee--how does that power get used to either/both escalate or de-escalate the conflict?
2. Both the chef and restaurant owner are clearly in conflict regarding the menu for the evening. However, that might be the proverbial tip of the iceberg. Is the menu the only topic of conflict? What clues do you get from the interaction that there is more going on? How does power figure into these other arenas of conflict?
3. Cloke & Goldsmith (2011, pp. 2-6) discuss "positions versus interests" as a way to understand how people can get locked into and unlocked from conflicts. Using their ideas, how might the chef and the boss come to some better resolution of their confict that is "interest" based as opposed to "positition" based? Identify their positions and their interests to help you answer this question. (The example about employee conflict over use of an air-conditioner in the office on pp. 5-6 is brilliant at making it clear what is a 'position' and what is an 'interest' and how to move a from debate to dialogue. I recommend you review this example before trying to respond to this prompt.)
