Psychological disorders that feature somatic symptoms are especially challenging to diagnoses as there is no quantifiable measurement of symptom or process. The somatic symptoms can take on many forms, or a sign of a real medical illness. All the disorders in this category share one commonality: the presence of somatic symptoms is associated with actual client distress.

14-year-old male athlete Simon fell in gym class sustaining a head injury. He developed headaches and child-like mannerisms and insisted he was 11 years old. CT and MRI brain were negative. He was unable to count to 10 but was accurate on multiplication. He read well but was unable to recite the alphabet. His biological mother recently returned to his life.

Using the information from Simon's scenario, address the following:

1. What signs/symptoms is the client displaying that lead you to consider dementia/delirium/somatic disorder?
2. What diagnostic tests are available to assist with this diagnosis? Given how [client] presents, what results would you expect to see?
3. Consider a nursing diagnosis for this client. What nursing interventions would you implement? Why?
4. Discuss prevention and treatment for this condition, if applicable.
5. Discuss pertinent medication strategies, if applicable.
