Debra, age 27, presents to your clinic today to have a pregnancy test. You notice that she has a fading bruise on the side of her face. This is her third pregnancy in 4 years. Debra has two girls and is hoping that this one will be a boy. Debra states "He will be so happy if this one is a little boy. I don't know how he will take it if it is another girl." You begin to suspect that Debra may be experiencing some marital difficulties so you ask if Debra is being abused by her husband. Debra immediately puts her hand to her face and says, "Oh, this. No, this was my fault. My 3-year-old had a temper tantrum and I caught this one in the face with her toy." Again, you ask Debra if she is safe. Debra starts to cry and says "He has been so great lately. He brought me flowers and gave me some spending money to go shopping. I don't know how to tell him I am pregnant again."
