Abstract
This study explores the impact of community-driven interventions on addressing substance abuse, with a specific focus on Woonga addiction in Hammarsdale Township, through the lens of the God's Tebarnacle Foundation rehabilitation center founded by Mama Biyela, led by her and her sons. This research employs a Community-Based Participatory Action Research (CBPAR) approach, engaging local stakeholders, recovering addicts, and healthcare professionals to explore the socio-cultural dynamics influencing addiction and sustainable recovery processes. The study identifies critical needs such as inadequate medical support, financial constraints, and security concerns that impede the effectiveness of rehabilitation efforts. By utilizing qualitative methods, including focus groups and interviews, alongside quantitative surveys, the research aims to gather comprehensive data on addiction prevalence, relapse rates, and available support services.
These findings will undergo thematic and statistical analysis to elucidate factors promoting addiction and recovery within socio-economically challenged contexts. Ethical considerations, including informed consent and cultural sensitivity, guide the research to ensure participant confidentiality and respect for local norms. The anticipated outcome is the development of a robust intervention model that leverages the township's unique cultural and communal assets. This model aspires to enhance rehabilitation services, reduce relapse rates, and empower community resilience, providing a template for similar grassroots initiatives in comparable socio-economic settings. This research contributes significant insights into the role of community-based interventions in mitigating drug addiction challenges in marginalized communities.
