You have just been laid off from what you thought was your dream job, and now you are in the process of looking for a new position in a different organization. You know from your research that, even though you got your previous job without knowing anyone at the organization, the majority of positions are filled through networking.

Unfortunately, Tara was so busy in her new career that she spent little time building her network. She was collegial with her coworkers, but because so much of her work was done remotely, it was hard to develop deeper bonds. Similarly, Tara had a good working relationship with her supervisor Barry, but ever since she'd been laid off, she hadn't been in contact with him at all. Finally, her college professors had been very supportive and provided her with references previously, but now over two years had passed, and she didn't think any of them would remember her any more. What should Tara do?

1. If Tara could have a do-over, what should she have done differently to build a stronger network?

2. Can you relate to Tara? How strong is your own network? If you were to lose your job, how confident are you that you'd be able to find a new one easily?

3. What are some specific steps that Tara should take right away to start building up her network?
