This assignment asks you to demonstrate the course competency of Global Perspective by constructing an evidence-based argument that integrates multiple perspectives on an issue in Modern US History. The ability to understand different perspectives is not only a critical skill for historians, it is a skill that is essential to functioning as a well-informed citizen in society today. This assignment asks you to create a dialog between two historical figures for the purpose of better understanding diverse historical perspectives.
The purpose of this assignment is to help you practice the following skills that are essential to your success in this course / in school / in this field / in professional life beyond school:
- Devise a hypothetical dialog between two historical figures on an important issue or even in modern U.S. history.
- Reconstruct each figure's perspective on the issue and distill their key arguments in your own words.
- Use primary sources together with prior knowledge to engage in critical thinking about the figures and the topic.
First, read and take notes on the following two newsletters, paying attention to similarities and differences on the issue of women's suffrage.
- "The Remonstrance against Woman Suffrage." Remonstrance (1920): [1]. Nineteenth Century Collections Online (accessed May 14, 2022).
- "The Suffragist." The Suffragist VII, no. 37 (1919). Nineteenth Century Collections Online (accessed May 14, 2022).
Then, write a letter exchange or spoken dialog between two women in 1920 on opposite sides of the women's suffrage issue. Creatively explain who the women are and how they are related. Perhaps they are a mother and daughter, two friends, pen pals, or sisters. Regardless of their relationship, they are on opposite sides of this issue. Write a dialog in which each woman attempts to persuade the other to change their mind on the issue of suffrage. Write either at least 4 short letters (1 paragraph each) or 300 to 400 words of dialog.
