Licensing and certification are key points in a counselor's professional career. There are several differences between state license and national certification. State license is the license required by the state to be able to work as a counselor; it should be noted that the license is mandatory. On the other hand, national certification is a certification that improves the counselor's competence; it should be noted that this certification is voluntary (NBCC | National Board for Certified Counselors & Affiliates, n.d.-b). The certificate does not guarantee that the professional is fit to work within the state since certification and license are different processes. Even if the professional has the national certification, he or she is obliged to obtain state license in order to comply with the state requirements and be able to work within it. The primary purpose of national certification is to demonstrate that the counselor has already acquired knowledge and academic standards at a national level, which provides greater credibility and a better status within the profession.
