Question: Leading as a Function of Management

Leading as a management function inspires followers increases morale

involves a manager spending time connecting with his or her employees on an interpersonal level. This goes beyond simply managing tasks; instead, it consists of communicating openly with employees, motivating employees toward higher productivity levels, inspiring employees to be creative and innovative, and encouraging employees to achieve their goals. Not all managers are leaders. An employee will follow a manager's directions for doing a job because he or she has to. Still, an employee will voluntarily follow the directions of a leader because he or she believes in who the leader is as a person and in what the leader stands for and how the leader inspires him or her.

A successful leader , , and encourages effective communication between employees.

Delegation occurs when someone with authority confers upon another person the power to do particular task. Delegation is usually a one-way street - superiors delegate authority to subordinates. However, the ultimate responsibility for task completion usually remains the person who delegated the authority to complete it. For example, if your boss delegates a task to you, she is likely still ultimately responsible for making sure that task is accomplished.

Quality of Leadership

Now, let's look at one final aspect of delegation--the quality of the leadership. Theorists have noted that a leader who uses delegation can approach it from three standpoints. First, the leader can delegate all of his authority such that he surrenders all of his responsibility for all of his tasks. Second, a leader may refuse to delegate because he is afraid of losing control. Such leaders will typically fail in their tasks because they cannot accomplish everything without delegation. Finally, a wise leader will delegate as necessary, but he completely understands that he is ultimately responsible for accomplishing his office's duties. In other words, if a subordinate fails to complete task, the leader is ultimately accountable.
