SCENARIO:

One of the most common conditions needing medical attention in newborn babies is jaundice, which refers to the yellow colouration of the skin and the sclera caused by the accumulation of bilirubin in the skin and mucous membranes. Jaundice is caused by a raised level of bilirubin in the body, a condition known as hyperbilirubinemia. Approximately 60% of term and 80% of preterm babies develop jaundice in the first week of life, and about 10% of breastfed babies are still jaundiced at 1 month. For most babies, jaundice is not an indication of an underlying disease, and this early jaundice (termed physiological jaundice) is generally harmless. Jaundice is a marker used to identify those infants who may be at risk for developing severe hyperbilirubinemia. Severe hyperbilirubinemia can be damaging to an infant's nervous system and cause brain damage(kernicterus).
