This 65-year-old man is scheduled for a bronchoscopy; he is a non-smoker and has never been diagnosed with asthma. He does have severe GERD and severe chronic cough. Procedure: The flexible bronchoscope is inserted through the patient's mouth and advanced into the right middle lobe. The mucosa is somewhat friable, but there are no endobronchial lesions noted. The scope was then introduced into the right lower lobe, where brushing and washings were obtained. The bronchoscope was passed quickly to the left side where no endobronchial lesions were present. As the scope was removed, it was noted that the patient had severe irritation of the trachea and main bronchus. Biopsies were taken of this area; pathology confirmed severe tracheobronchitis, but there was no evidence of malignancy.
