Scenario: You are the nurse doing home visits in a retirement community. Your client is an 85-year-old man who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease (AD). His adult children are with him for the visit. They want to know about the disease and what treatment options exist. After you explain the progression of the disease, they ask if is curable. How should you answer? There are medications that may help delay cognitive decline, but the disease is not curable. If treatment is started early, disease progression can be reversed. Drugs exist that can cure AD, you just have to find the one that works for you. If treatment is initiated before complete neuronal damage, disease progression can be stopped.
