Question

Development of a Rapid Detection Method for Ethylene Glycol and Glycolic Acid in Feline Samples: A Response to Increasing Antifreeze Poisoning Incidents in Korea". This article discusses a methodology that bypasses the lengthy process of sending a sample to a lab for derivatization. Ethylene glycol (EG), the toxic component of antifreeze or glycolic acid (GA), what the EG is metabolized into are tested for using gas chromatography (GC-MS) for EG and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). These methods have been proven as dependable and are much quicker than derivatization. This meets the need of a quick and effective way of improving animal welfare investigations and forensic science.
