Generational trauma, also known as intergenerational or transgenerational trauma, is a concept suggesting that the impacts of traumatic experiences can be passed down from generation to the next within families and groups. Generational trauma can affect behavioral modeling and parenting styles. Parents can pass on unhealthy coping skills, communication styles, or even attachment issues with their children. Children may even learn to normalize trauma and unhealthy behaviors if they are raised with those experiences and not even realize it. As they grow older the only difference they may notice is spending time with families that have not experienced generational trauma. Seeking professional help is crucial.

This can include family therapy to improve communication and understanding among members. Individual therapy to process trauma and develop coping strategies, trauma-informed therapies like EMDR and Somatic Experiencing that will address emotional pain, and culturally-informed treatment that considers background and experiences. Emotional responses are crucial with the maturity levels that each child experiences to help break the cycle. Open communication with the entire family is also important because each individual needs to heal and know how to cope with everyday life.
