Case: During this course we will explore how the increasing use of data in impacts our lives and raises legal and ethical concerns especially relative to how personal data is collected, shared, used and stored. One of the most interesting data topics in the millennium is how social media collects and shares personal data. Whether we are using our cell phones, the Internet, gaming or applications on our cell phones, data is being collected and stored. The most important question that we can ask is how do the business and industry sectors, government, and others use our personal data? Another question to consider is: Should be allowed to control how much of our personal data is shared with others?Have you ever thought about how businesses use and store data for marketing purposes to drive business and make informed data driven decisions? There are also ethical concerns about how collected data is being used and shared and whether any lines are being crossed by those collecting and sharing data. As we explore Data Law, Ethics and Business Intelligence, ask yourself the following questions:

What are businesses and others doing with our personal data?
Is the personal data being shared accurate?
What ethical guidelines are in place to make sure that personal and business data are secure?
Have you ever wondered how businesses with employees in other countries are securing your personal data?
Should the USA have a GDPR like the UK?
What are businesses doing with my personal data?
Does the USA need strict data protection and privacy law?
What are your rights relative to your personal data?
How is data used to discriminate against individuals?
What is the value of data?
Who owns data?

As we learn about data law, ethics and business intelligence, we will be able to develop a better understanding as to how data shapes our world. One last question to consider: Is data controlling our lives? Consider some of the issues in the Netflix series "Black Mirror.
