Question: Determine whether you would approve or encourage them to revise their informal assessment plan.
Share at least two reasons you would approve it or encourage them to revise it.
Thank you for reaching out regarding information on the informal assessments that will be conducted in our infant room. Observations will be the everyday assessment tool used most often. Through observations, caregivers/educators get to know each child individually and respond to their needs (Infants & Toddlers, 2014). This also ensures the quality of care for our infants and their families. The informal assessment that will be used the least is checklists. Checklists are not developmentally appropriate for infants and often are given to children in a task-oriented nature (CARLA, n.d). Parents may not view lists positively, which can cause them to believe that their child is not reaching developmental milestones or begin comparing their child to others around them.
The informal assessment data is collected based on observations. Classroom staff will collaborate and assess which developmental domains or learning skills each infant could benefit from. If an infant is showing early signs of crawling, then gross motor development will be planned to assess that infant in reaching that milestone. Each infant will have a portfolio where observations and other data collected are kept. Portfolios are a great tool to help make informed decisions on which developmental domains the child may need assistance with.
I hope I have provided all the information regarding informal assessments in the infant room. If you have any other questions or concerns, please contact me.
