1.A component that is made of S-590 alloy is to be subjected to a static stress of 400 MPa at a high temperature. Using a safety factor of two based on the stress, determine the maximum temperature the component must be exposed to for it to sustain the stress for at least 1000 days.

2.A 12inx1inx3in ASTM 36 steel bar is loaded with an axial load of 90,000lbs and a transversal load of 288,000lbs (force applied perpendicular to the 1in side) The proportionality limit is 34,000psi. Compute (a) the strains in each of the transveral and longitudinal axes and (b) the total transversal dimension changes. Poisson's ratio is equal to 0.25.
