Case Study: Eighteen-year-old Gurjit has just started his very first job, working at a warehouse. On his first day, Gurjit was given an Employee Health & Safety Handbook and told that he should read it. A more senior employee gave him some basic instructions about how to operate the forklift and told him to be careful. Gurjit does not have a certificate for driving the forklift. Nobody appears to be particularly concerned about it. During his first shift, Gurjit drove a forklift and made several minor mistakes, but his supervisor and fellow employees said nothing to him. Gurjit does not want to let down the supervisor, who brought him into the company. The job is paid well so he has tried to work as fast as he can. In his third shift, Gurjit attempted to use the forklift to take down a crate of wine glasses from the storage shelf but failed. The crate fell onto the ground and all wine glasses were shattered. It is lucky that nobody got hurt, but the incident cost the company about $5,000 for the loss of the whole crate of wine glasses.
